We run a business from home in NSW suburb. We have two phone lines - one registered as a private line and the other registered as a business line. The second line Business line is with Optus and just has phone services.
We also have Foxtel over the cable; the outlet is in our rumpus room downstairs however, our Base Unit of 2-line Uniden Phone system is in the office room upstairs.
We need to move to NBN soon but we need some definitive answers and can't afford to have any impact on our business operations. A key requirement is that the two phone lines must continue to work independently with their own phone numbers and the current phone outlets must work. I have spoken with Telstra and Optus customer service and sales people and have discussed our requirements but have not been able to get definitive answers that we can rely upon.
Some Optus person suggested to use Optus loop, but it seems like an overkill and has bad reviews. However with NBN, we would prefer to work with Optus for both phone lines and internet. I have found a similar scenario in Telstra Forum and have provided that to both Telstra and Optus people but even then they can't confirm that is what will happen in our situation.
Most disappointing IMO is that Optus don't provide a single contact point for these processes so answers and capabilities you get on one phone call may differ when you next call back. Coincidently the post before yours was not happy with the relocation process.
I'm sure most go as planned but if you have specific requirements you should plan for things to go wrong whatever RSP you're with. Not all bad news though In your situation though you do have one potentially very good option IMO. This means you can get connected to the NBN while still connected to optus Cable. This would allow you to get most of your ducks in order and test on the spot with little risk. The only issue I can see is the transferring of the phone numbers after everything else is in place.
Yes, it indeed is a very frustrating process and you are absolutely right about having to deal with multiple people who will provide different answers. We are out of contract with Telstra as we have already served the 24 month contract period, so there should be no penalty to move.
However, not sure if we can get a new NBN connection considering that. Had to look into that, but no, a single line is not a problem. The NBN Installer will bring a splitter with them when they come to your place and install it in the wall plate on the side of your house.Because NBN does not support duet lines two phone numbers on one phone lineI will have to go to a third line for the Fax.
The problem seems to be that no-one can explain how to connect multiple phone numbers to the NBN. Everything seems to be designed for one phone number only. Telstra Gateway. I have tested sending and receiving a fax over the NBN phone line I have connected and it does work. I might change to a service later, but for now I want to keep the setup the same.
Aren't the hosted PBX systems for when a business has multiple phone lines but only uses one incoming number? I see that working well for a big business, but is it really needed for a small home office situation? I just want my home number, office number and a fax number. I want them going to 3 different locations, we need to know which line is which so they only ring the appropriate phones. I have spoken to telstra business and their monthly rates are significantly higher than residential. Why should I be forced to pay more for something I already have now?
I dont care about the fax but the other voice multiple number is used and I cant just lose it. Surely if we are going to get screwed over with the multiple number feature on NBN the least they can do is port the numbers to the NBN number so no one else gets them and business can continue.
Basically, I needed a Modem and Router for each phone line. So now I have four devices where I used to have one. So the saga is over, I have 2 of my 3 landlines connected, but don't mind the loss of the fax line. The alarm is working via GSM and the internet is faster. It does fluctuate a bit as I am still on a shared cable.
I'm going through the same issues for 3 phone lines. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
I'm a very retired IT person and these blank walls I'm encountering don't help. Yesterday NBN came and replaced my black box with another, supposedly to install the 2nd phone line. We are asked often can you use multiple phone sockets with NBN? If your NBN connection is coming through your existing Foxtel cable, or NBN have installed a new coaxial lead-in cable and socket to your home, if you are wanting to connect your existing phone sockets and have them working like before there are a few things that need to happen.
We are not exactly sure why your NBN installing contractors are not taking the time to do these few things to get your existing phone sockets working. We have been informed by many of our clients that when your HFC connection is completed, the NBN installing technician in many cases are telling you that you can only use one phone now and it has to be plugged directly into the NBN router.
This is NOT correct. If done correctly you can use your existing copper line phone sockets throughout your home or business for a multiple phone setup just like before. As you can see from this video the NBN technician are not informing their customers that in order to us your existing phone sockets your Telstra lead-in cable will need to be removed.
This cable if it is still connected back to the LI in the exchange will be sending 52 volts DC down the line. If this is plugged into your router it could not only damage your router but it will not allow your phone sockets to work properly or at all.
This would be a gradual decommissioning of the Telstra main pair copper network, and it would stop voltage flow that is not useful anymore. Even if they did disconnect from the exchange you will still need to locally disconnect from the Telstra copper network inside your home, because then your dial tone coming from your router is now going out into the copper network, and who knows what kind of mischief that could lend itself to.
Does NBN know about the 52 volts? Note: Your existing phone sockets can work with all the NBN connection methods, we are just highlighting HFC We are not exactly sure why your NBN installing contractors are not taking the time to do these few things to get your existing phone sockets working.
NBN contractors are not licenced, trained or qualified to work on this solution. CONNECTING EXISTING HOME PHONE SOCKET’S TO NBN HFC ROUTER

If you order self-install, but are not eligible, you may need a technician to help you connect and charges will apply.I have 4 phone sockets wired up all over the house, I hope the "Green socket" from the modem can drive them all!! The last 2 rely on line power to work, the other 2 don't. The sockets are on different levels in the house. What does need to be done in anycase is that the incoming line needs to be disconnected from those outlets in all cases and a new socket installed if on FTTN so that you can connect them to the Green Socket.
I did disconnect the incoming line and used one of the sockets my fax machine socket as a temporary connection to the modem. I have room for another socket on the same plate to connect to the fax.
All seem to be working well with 3 loads, the line reads 46V with just one load and 45V with 3 loads. So overall it should not be more than 4 REN loads, I hope the modem was designed for at least 4 or 5 REN loads but there is no info that I can see regarding that. Could be pushing it and there is no guarantee that the fax will work on your NBN connection no matter how you have set it up.
Thanks, It all seems to work OK for now, haven't tried the fax yet. I guess if it doesn't work it's not the end of the world, it get used maybe once a year. I have sent the gateway manufacturer an email asking for information on the REN of the Green socket, it's annoying that the information is not provided, it's the same as not showing the operating voltage for the device. Of course anyone else but them is presumably too stupid to understand.
Had a call from Telstra last night to see if everything went OK with the install, and I asked about that, the poor girl didn't even know what I was talking about. It seem that if something is not written on a cue card then they go blank.

Did you know that the NBN allows both your internet data and your telephone voice to work over the internet connection? This means with NBN we no longer need to plug in our telephone handset into the old copper-based telephone wall sockets. Instead, we need to plug the telephone handset into either the Modem or into the NBN Connection Box, depending on what type of NBN technology you have at your premises.
For all other NBN technologies, you need to connect your telephone handset into the Phone 1 or Phone 2 port on the back of your modem. When the phone is plugged in, the Phone 1 or Phone 2 light on the front of the modem will be lit.
